Patents are not a problem for non-commercial use.
The easist way I can think of, is mechanical. Use to send a solenoid valve to press the button on the phone. The phone has no destination number is already registered and ready to send SMS. Valves, through the alarm system.
Other techniques use the fact that the connector on the device, but I'm not sure what protocols are used.
Good idea, but probably have patent issues. The device is already on the market in limited areas.
